Description : CDK5 is a member of the Cyclin-Dependent Kinase family that is most abundant in the mammalian brain. Active form of CDK5, which has also been called neuronal cdc2-like kinase, is a heterodimer of CDK5 and a 25 kDa protein which is derived proteolytically from a 35 kDa brain and neuron-specific protein and is essential for the kinase activity of CDK5. CDK5 has emerged as a crucial regulator of neuronal migration in the developing central nervous system. CDK5 phosphorylates a diverse list of substrates, implicating it in the regulation of a range of cellular processes - from adhesion and motility, to synaptic plasticity and drug addiction.

Ask a question
Is CDK5 derived from human fetal cell lines? 03/28/2023

The CDK5 is expressed from HEK293 host, which is a mammalian cells system.

In what other diseases or conditions might CDK5 be implicated? 03/17/2021

CDK5 has been studied in relation to psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder due to its involvement in neuronal function and synaptic plasticity.

Could CDK5 inhibition be beneficial in cancer treatment? 07/30/2019

Yes, some studies indicate that inhibiting CDK5 might suppress cancer cell proliferation and migration, showing promise as a target for cancer therapy.

How does CDK5 inhibition affect synaptic plasticity and memory? 03/30/2017

CDK5 inhibition can impact synaptic plasticity positively, potentially enhancing memory formation and cognition.

How does CDK5 function differently from other cyclin-dependent kinases? 11/10/2016

CDK5 is primarily active in post-mitotic neurons, unlike other CDKs that function during the cell cycle. Its activity is modulated by binding to non-cyclin proteins like p35 or p39.

Is there evidence supporting the use of CDK5 inhibitors in preclinical models of neurodegenerative diseases? 01/20/2016

Yes, preclinical studies have shown promising results in animal models, indicating the potential efficacy of CDK5 inhibitors in slowing disease progression.
