The SMT chromatographic kit is based on the specific immuno-chemical reactions between antigen and antibody. The testing procedures are simple. When add one drop of serum/meat juice sample into the sample collecting area, the sample will re-dissolve the monoclonal antibody-colloidal conjugate in five minutes. If the drug is absent in the sample, T and C lines will show on the membrane. As the concentration of SMT drug in the sample increases, the probability of the monoclonal antibody-colloidal conjugate binding to the protein coated on the membrane decreases, and therefore the color of T line will be lighter.
Sulfa drugs are the common used additives in feedstock for the functions of anti-bacteria, anti-helmathetic and growth promoter. Livestock treated with SMT in an extensive period will reveal chronic intoxication and blood producing problems. The misuse of SMT could produce antibiotic resistant bacteria in human beings. Therefore, all the developed countries prohibit the use of SMT in feedstock as an additive, and as well set a maximum amount of SMT permitted in edible tissues. SMT detection has become an important issue in livestock trading zones. Traditionally, the detection methods for sulfa drug residues are high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). These methods are expensive and time-consuming, and therefore the livestock are not analyzed thoroughly before being sold. In addition, the complicated analyzing procedures require more skilled operators. It constrains the promotion and the efficiency of the detection. In recent years, countries demand for better livestock quality, especially when WTO allows free trade in agricultures, and provokes the livestock trading activity. If the inspection unit cannot identify the illegal products in time, it might impose a food hazard to publics.
