Bladder Cancer-related Gene Mutation was Identified

The finding comes from an international research associated with bladder carcinoma-related gene mutation. In some way, the finding stresses the importance of genetic test for prevention. The research was later published on Nature Genetics.

During the study, researchers found that STAG2 is the most mutation inclined gene in bladder cancer, especially for local carcinoma.

We know most of bladder cancer is superficial cancer that won’t spread or invade other organs and tissues, thus it is relatively easy to treat and have good prognosis. However, the residual cancer cells after treatment might recur or transfer to other organs. Since physicians have no way to make sure if surgery removes all of the cancerous cells, thus patients need to have bladder endoscopy for further examination, but the examination is expensive and suffering for patients.

Upon the discovery of the indication of gene STAG2, scientists are doing large scale studies aimed to utilize the gene and develop novel method.

About STAG2

It is component of cohesin complex, a complex required for the cohesion of sister chromatids after DNA replication. The cohesin complex apparently forms a large proteinaceous ring within which sister chromatids can be trapped. At anaphase, the complex is cleaved and dissociates from chromatin, allowing sister chromatids to segregate. The cohesin complex may also play a role in spindle pole assembly during mitosis.
