Nature Reports Reveal that MX2 is Also a Powerful Inhibitor for HIV-1

People have known that protein MX1 can suppress the replication of RNA and DNA viruses, HIV-1 in human body, for example for many years, but MX2 was ineffective against influenza virus.

Now two reports revealed on Nature that protein MX2 also has the similar but different ability. The report said that protein IFN-induced myxovirus resistance 2 (MX2) is a powerful inhibitor for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and other chronic viruses and as a key effector of IFN-α-mediated resistance to HIV-1 infection.

Moreover, the dependence of MX2 to GTP to anti-HIV-1 activity is much less than MX1 and MX2 has much wider antiviral ability with GTP-dependent enzyme, indicating mechanism may exist between the two proteins.

The new finding suggests MX2 might be a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
