Drug Company Concern: Trend in Pharmaceutical Information

On January 3rd, the Public Accounts Committee, British House of Commons published a report with regard to the reservation issue of Tamiflu (a kind of influenza drug that is usually used in the treatment of both seasonal flu and swine flu), which sparked a discussion about whether the clinical trial data should be made ??public. Some British politicians said because lack of transparency in clinical trials makes physicians, researchers and patients much perplexed.

In recent years, the British spent £424 million to reserve Tamiflu, but about £74 million is boondoggle due to improper reserves and other reasons.

Under this setting, some medical researchers questioned the lack of evidence-based medicine Tamiflu and some blamed the absence of public clinic details and data since the manufacturer, Roche haven’t.

Members of the public accounts committee Richard Bacon said, "Some remarks claim that regulators cannot reach all the available information, for which we are deeply troubled by the lack of transparency of clinical trial information, which also hinder the relevant departments to assess the efficacy of Tamiflu."

"Due to the lack of adequate sources of information, physicians, researchers and patients are unable to make informed decisions about treatment options."

A few days ago, an industry plan requiring inter-industry sharing of clinical trial data was effective, which was supported by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is also promoting this report, hoping to share more clinical data among industry.
