New Hormone Target Clues for Biopharmaceutical Companies

New Hormone Target Clues for Biopharmaceutical Companies

A new research found the effective effect of obesity-against of two hormones in gut, which might be an exciting news for drug companies and individuals who want to keep slim.

The two hormones are PYY3-36 and PP. PYY3-36, or Peptide YY (peptide tyrosine tyrosine or pancreatic peptide YY3-36, PYY), is found in L cells in the mucosa of gastrointestinal tract, especially in ileum and colon. Also, a small amount of PYY is found in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and jejunum. PYY exerts its action through NPY receptors; it inhibits gastric motility and increases water and electrolyte absorption in the colon. PP, or pancreatic polypeptide, is secreted by PP cells in the endocrine pancreas predominantly in the head of the pancreas. It will self-regulate pancreatic secretion as well as affect hepatic glycogen levels and gastrointestinal secretions.

In the research, they injected PYY3-36 and PP into mice and found that these mice ate less and generated less fat as well as no signs of insulin-resistance. They also found that the hormones stimulated various nerve pathways.

Intrigued by the findings, many companies begin to explore the specific effect of boosting PYY3-36 and PP respectively as well as their combination effect. When used together, either of the hormones will reduce the amount of neuropeptide Y (NPY), a powerful neurotransmitter that affects a variety of things including appetite, mood, heart rate, temperature and energy levels.

Until the report, there is still no declaration that claims the detailed molecular interactions of the hormones. But this is virtually an important finding which indicates new clues for companies and academic fields.
