Use a More Cheap with Equal Effect Paper-based Diagnostic Method to Test Whether You Are Pregnant, Have Diabetes, Malaria etc.?
You could find the new finding on the American Chemical Society journal Langmuir. The new advance in diagnostics research was conducted by University of Washington bioengineer Daniel Ratner and his team.
Now we already can do home based tests for some conditions, such as for pregnancy, diabetes, malaria and others with a diagnostic paper. But the paper was expensive as it uses sticky membrane—nitrocellulose with special paper. Daniel and his team thought about the innovative solution, which is use plain paper and most common industrial solvent divinyl sulfone instead to decline the production cost. To here, people would wonder about the effect and efficacy of their new alternative paper. The research team also didn’t assure about that at first. By exposing that paper to fluorescent ricin, a poison that sticks to galactose, showed that the poison was present, which proved the paper has the same effect as the previous one we used but with more cheap and available features.
Regarding that, researchers assumed the innovative paper might also be able to be used to stick any medical chemicals, such as antibodies, proteins, DNA and other small or big molecules.
