Description : | Agrp, the proteinproduct of the Agouti Related Transcript (ART), is a neuroprotein thatregulates energy metabolism and the development of obesity by antagonizing αmelanocytestimulating hormone (α-MSH) action on MC-3 and MC-4 receptors. Agrp is predominantlyexpressed in the hypothalamus and adrenal medulla. Mature mouse Agrp is a 111amino acid (aa) polypeptide; its C-terminal portion contains ten conservedcysteines that form five disulfide bonds. Within the C-terminal region, mouseAgrp shares 80% and 90% aa sequence identity with human and rat Agrp, respectively. It also shares 44% aa sequence identity with Agrp. As with Agrp, the C-terminal cysteine rich region is sufficient for biological activity. |

Q&As (10)
Ask a questionAGRP and the melanocortin system are potential targets for developing anti-obesity therapies, and research is ongoing to develop selective agonists or antagonists to modulate AGRP signaling.
AGRP is also implicated in the modulation of autonomic functions, such as blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular control.
AGRP inhibits the signaling of melanocortin receptors, leading to reduced cAMP production and affecting intracellular pathways involved in appetite and energy regulation.
AGRP acts as a key neuropeptide in the hypothalamus, integrating signals from peripheral tissues to regulate energy homeostasis, appetite, and body weight.
AGRP functions as an antagonist to melanocortin receptors, counteracting the effects of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), which promotes satiety and energy expenditure.
Yes, AGRP can interact with other neuropeptides, such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), and together they influence the central regulation of appetite and energy balance.
Dysregulation of AGRP expression or activity has been suggested to contribute to the development of certain eating disorders, such as binge eating disorder or hyperphagia.
While AGRP itself is not typically used as a diagnostic marker, studying its expression levels or genetic variations may provide insights into the risk and development of metabolic disorders.
AGRP acts on the melanocortin receptors in the brain, inhibiting their activation and resulting in an increase in appetite and a decrease in energy expenditure.
AGRP levels may have potential as a biomarker for monitoring the response to weight loss interventions, but further research is needed to establish its clinical utility.
