Cat. No. : CALCA-317H
Description : Procalcitonin is a peptide hormone mainly produced by the C cells of the thyroid and certain endocrine cells of the lung. Under normal expression conditions, procalcitonin is immediately cleaved into three specific fragments, an N terminal residue, calcitonin and katacalcin. Levels of unprocessed procalcitonin rise significantly after bacterial infection, trauma or shock.
Source : Human
Host : Escherichia Coli.
Form : Lyophilized from 10mM sodium phosphate pH-7.5.
Purity : Greater than 97.0% as determined by(a) Analysis by RP-HPLC. (b) Analysis by SDS-PAGE.
Bio-activity : Human Procalcitonin was tested using Biomerieux reagents on the Min-Vidas. The assay was run at 80 ng/ml with a recovery of 82 percent.
Physical Appearance : Sterile Filtered White lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder.
Solubility : It is recommended to reconstitute the lyophilized procalcitonin sterile 18Mμ-cm H2O at 100 µg/ml, which can then be further diluted to other aqueous solutions.
Amino acid sequence : APFRSALESS PADPATLSED EARLLLAALV QDYVQMKASE LEQEQEREGS SLDSPRSKRC GNLSTCMLGT YTQDFNKFHT FPQTAIGVGA PGKKRDMSSD LERDHRPHVS MPQNAN.
Storage : Lyophilized procalcitonin although stable at room temperature for 3 weeks, should be stored desiccated below -18°C. Upon reconstitution procalcitonin should be stored at 4°C between 2-7 days and for future use below -18°C. For long term storage it is recommended to add a carrier protein (0.1% HSA or BSA). Please prevent freeze-thaw cycles.

Ask a question
What is the chemical structure of calcitonin, and how does it regulate calcium levels in the body? 05/26/2021

CALCA is a peptide hormone. It regulates calcium levels by reducing bone resorption, which lowers blood calcium levels, and by enhancing calcium excretion by the kidneys.

How is calcitonin synthesized from the CALCA gene? 10/14/2020

Calcitonin is synthesized from the CALCA gene through tissue-specific alternative RNA splicing of gene transcripts and cleavage of inactive precursor proteins.

What is the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), another product of CALCA? 11/23/2019

CGRP functions as a vasodilator and plays a role in antimicrobial defense in addition to its role in neurovascular regulation.

How is CALCA production affected by changes in serum calcium levels? 08/08/2018

An increase in serum calcium levels stimulates the secretion of CALCA to help reduce the excess calcium in the bloodstream.

Can you explain the relationship betweCALCA and parathyroid hormone (PTH)? 06/02/2018

CALCA and PTH are antagonistic hormones. PTH increases blood calcium levels, whereas calcitonin reduces them. They work together to maintain calcium homeostasis.
