Description : This gene encodes a member of the amelogenin family of extracellular matrix proteins. Amelogenins are involved in biomineralization during tooth enamel development. Mutations in this gene cause X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.

Ask a question
What are the post-translational modifications of AMELX and their significance in enamel matrix assembly and mineralization? 09/10/2021

AMELX undergoes various post-translational modifications, including phosphorylation and glycosylation, which contribute to its proper folding, secretion, and enamel matrix assembly.

What are the molecular mechanisms underlying AMELX gene regulation during tooth development and mineralization? 04/06/2021

AMELX gene regulation during tooth development is orchestrated by a complex interplay of transcription factors, epigenetic modifications, and signaling pathways, ensuring precise spatiotemporal expression for enamel formation.

How does AMELX contribute to the mechanical properties of enamel, such as hardness, resilience, and resistance to wear? 09/21/2020

AMELX contributes to the mechanical properties of enamel, such as its hardness, resilience, and wear resistance, through its involvement in enamel crystal organization and interlocking.

Can manipulating AMELX expression or activity provide potential strategies for enamel regeneration or the development of biomimetic materials for tooth repair? 08/26/2020

Manipulating AMELX expression or activity holds potential for enamel regeneration strategies, such as promoting ameloblast differentiation from stem cells or developing biomimetic materials that mimic the composition and structure of natural enamel for tooth repair and restoration.

What are the functional consequences of AMELX mutations or deletions in amelogenesis imperfecta, and how do they affect enamel formation and tooth integrity? 05/08/2020

Mutations or deletions in the AMELX gene result in amelogenesis imperfecta, leading to enamel defects, such as hypoplasia or hypomineralization, and compromised tooth integrity.

How does AMELX interact with other enamel matrix proteins and extracellular matrix components, and what is the impact on enamel structure and properties? 04/09/2020

AMELX interacts with other enamel matrix proteins, such as amelogenin and enamelin, as well as extracellular matrix components, facilitating enamel matrix assembly, organization, and mineralization.

What are the signaling pathways involved in AMELX-mediated enamel development, and how do they coordinate ameloblast differentiation and enamel secretion? 12/13/2019

Signaling pathways, including Wnt, BMP, and FGF signaling, regulate AMELX expression and function, coordinating ameloblast differentiation, enamel secretion, and mineralization processes.

How does AMELX expression differ between ameloblasts and other dental cell types, and what is its role in enamel formation? 11/14/2019

AMELX is highly expressed in ameloblasts, the cells responsible for enamel formation, and its role involves the synthesis and secretion of enamel matrix proteins essential for enamel structure and hardness.

How does AMELX participate in enamel mineralization processes, including the deposition and organization of hydroxyapatite crystals? 02/25/2018

AMELX plays a critical role in enamel mineralization by participating in the nucleation and growth of hydroxyapatite crystals, influencing their size, orientation, and arrangement within the enamel matrix.

How does AMELX expression and function change during tooth aging or in response to dental diseases, such as dental caries or enamel erosion? 05/09/2017

AMELX expression may change during tooth aging or in dental diseases, reflecting altered enamel turnover, enamel remineralization processes, or adaptive responses to pathological conditions.
