Description : | Streptavidin, a tetrameric protein secreted by Streptomyces avidinii, binds tightly to a small growth factor biotin. It finds wide use in molecular biology through its extraordinarily strong affinity for the vitamin biotin; the dissociation constant (Kd) of the biotin-streptavidin complex is on the order of ~10-15 mol/L. The high affinity recognition of biotin and biotinylated molecules has made streptavidin one of the most important components in diagnostics and laboratory kits. |

Q&As (7)
Ask a questionStreptavidin formulations often include shortened variants (core streptavidin proteins) with shortened N and C termini compared to natural streptavidin. These variants offer improved characteristics in terms of homogeneity, solubility, resistance to protein hydrolysis, and accessibility of the biotin-binding pocket.
Streptavidin is a 55kDa tetrameric protein secreted by Streptomyces avidinii, known for its strong binding affinity with biotin.
Streptavidin tightly binds to biotin (sc-204706).
The dissociation constant (Kd) for the Biotin-Streptavidin complex is approximately ~10^15M, indicating an exceptionally strong binding affinity.
The Streptavidin/Biotin system exhibits one of the largest observed binding free energies, making it suitable for non-covalent binding of proteins and small ligands in aqueous solutions. The complex is also highly stable over a broad range of temperature and pH values.
Streptavidin is produced by Streptomyces avidinii.
Streptavidin is widely used in molecular biology due to its unique high affinity for biotin, making it a valuable tool for various applications.
