Description : A homologue of the E. coli exonuclease III, APE1 is the major mammalian AP endonuclease required for base excision repair. Additionally, APE1 also plays a redox function. It is identical to the redox protein Ref-1. The redox activity of HAP1 is separable from its AP endonuclease activity.
