FUCA1
-
Official Full Name
fucosidase, alpha-L- 1, tissue
-
Overview
The protein encoded by this gene is a lysosomal enzyme involved in the degradation of fucose-containing glycoproteins and glycolipids. Mutations in this gene are associated with fucosidosis (FUCA1D), which is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease. A pseudogene of this locus is present on chr 2. -

Ask a questionGenetic mutations in FUCA1 can lead to deficient enzyme activity, affecting glycan metabolism.
Altered FUCA1 activity is associated with lysosomal storage diseases, such as fucosidosis, due to the accumulation of undigested glycans.
FUCA1, an alpha-L-fucosidase, is involved in the breakdown of complex sugars (glycans) in cellular metabolism.
FUCA1 is crucial for normal lysosomal function, aiding in the breakdown of glycoproteins and glycolipids.
It helps in glycan degradation by cleaving fucose residues, a key step in glycan processing.
FUCA1 works alongside other enzymes in glycan metabolism, ensuring efficient breakdown and recycling of cellular components.
