UCHL1

  • Official Full Name

ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal esterase L1 (ubiquitin thiolesterase)

  • Overview

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the peptidase C12 family. This enzyme is a thiol protease that hydrolyzes a peptide bond at the C-terminal glycine of ubiquitin. This gene is specifically expressed in the neurons and in cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. Mutations in this gene may be associated with Parkinson disease.[provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

Ask a question
Can UCHL1 be used in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases? 10/19/2021

Early research suggests that changes in UCHL1 levels may be detected in the early stages of some neurodegenerative diseases, but more studies are needed for validation.

Is UCHL1 exclusively associated with neurological functions? 11/22/2019

While UCHL1 is primarily associated with neurological functions, it also has roles in non-neuronal tissues, including certain types of cancer cells.

What are the challenges in using UCHL1 as a diagnostic marker? 09/25/2019

Challenges include the need for standardized assays, variations in UCHL1 levels among individuals, and the influence of other factors on its expression.

Can UCHL1 levels serve as a biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases? 11/22/2017

Yes, elevated or decreased levels of UCHL1 in cerebrospinal fluid or blood may serve as potential biomarkers for certain neurological disorders.

What other conditions or diseases are associated with UCHL1 dysfunction? 07/05/2016

UCHL1 dysfunction has been implicated in conditions such as certain cancers and ischemic stroke.
