The possible mechanisms of stem cell therapy for AD include repairing and replacing damaged neurons, reconstructing neural circuits and functions, secreting trophic factors, and inhibiting amyloid protein formation. Using stem cells to treat AD is rapidly gaining momentum and considered to be the most potential treatment option for radical curing of this disease, as animal model-based researches indicate optimistic results, in addition, the world\u2019s first stem cell drug derived from mesenchymal stem cells has been approved for the treatment of AD. Nonetheless, it is necessary to study the safety and efficacy of stem cell therapy prior to human clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ServiceShowPic\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativebiomart.net\/alzheimacy\/wp-content\/themes\/alzheimacy\/images\/Stem-Cell-Therapy-1.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The stem cells currently utilized for the research and development of stem cell therapy in AD mainly include neural stem cells (NSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), embryonic stem cells (ESCs), as well as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Neural stem cells (NSCs)<\/strong>: NSC plays an important role in nerve development and repair of damaged nerve tissue. Moreover, the paracrine function of NSCs has shown great therapeutic potential. In addition, genetic modification of NSCs with improved function \u00a0also has a good effect on the treatment of AD.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)<\/strong>: MSC is regarded as the most promising candidate for the stem cell therapy in AD, because its effectiveness and safety have been confirmed by many pre-clinical studies and clinical trials. MSCs utilized in researches of stem cell therapy in AD mainly include bone marrow-derived MSCs, umbilical cord-derived MSCs and adipose tissue-derived MSCs, <em>etc<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Embryonic stem cells (ESCs)<\/strong>: Theoretically, the differentiation potential of ESCs is excellent, and some rodent animal model-based studies have shown that transplantation of ESCs can restore cognitive function, however, clinical transformation is limited because undifferentiated ESCs may bring the risk of uncontrolled cell growth and tumor formation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)<\/strong>: The sources of iPSCs are stable, and immune rejection is less. Structurally and functionally mature neurons are derived from iPSCs and synaptic networks with electrophysiological activity are formed. The use of some additional transcription factors during induction may also allow stem cells directly differentiate into specific neuronal subtypes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Alzheimacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although there are above-mentioned types of stem cells available for the development of stem cell therapy in AD, stem cells from each source have their own shortcomings. For example, NSCs are highly immunogenic and may produce strong immune rejection; ESCs may bring the risk of uncontrolled cell growth and tumor formation, therefore, the development of specific therapies must be comprehensively evaluated for effectiveness and safety, and then the prospect of clinical application can be predicted.
