Description : The fragmentation of nuclear DNA is a hallmark of apoptotic cell death. The activities of caspase and nuclease are involved in the DNA fragmentation. Caspase-activated deoxyribo-nuclease (CAD), also termed DNA fragmentation factor (DFF40), is one such nuclease, and is capable of inducing DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation after cleavage by caspase-3 of its inhibitor ICAD/DFF45. Caspase and CAD independent DNA fragmentation also exists. Recent studies demonstrated that another nuclease, endonuclease G (EndoG), is specifically activated by apoptotic stimuli and is able to induce nucleosomal fragmentation of DNA independently of caspase and DFF/CAD. EndoG is a mitochondrion-specific nuclease that translocates to the nucleus and cleaves chromatin DNA during apoptosis. The homologue of mammalian EndoG is the first mitochondrial protein identified to be involved in apoptosis in C. elegans. EndoG also cleaves DNA in vitro.

Ask a question
What is the structure ENDOG? 09/17/2022

The structure of ENDOG includes multiple functional domains, including a hydrophobic transmembrane domain at the N-terminus, an uncoupling domain at the intermediate, and a proton pump domain at the C-terminus.

How is ENDOG involved in the uncoupling of the inner mitochondrial membrane? 01/25/2022

It catalyzes the electron transfer of NADH+H⁺ to the outside mitochondria via the uncoupling domain, while converting the proton electrochemical gradient of the inner mitochondrial membrane into heat energy.

How it affects energy metabolism and nutrient metabolism ENDOG? 11/14/2021

ENDOG regulates mitochondrial energy metabolism and nutrient metabolism processes through uncoupling and proton pump action. For example, it can transfer electrons of NADH+H⁺ to the outside of mitochondria while converting the proton electrochemical gradient of the inner mitochondrial membrane into heat energy.

Is it related to other ENDOG proteins? 09/03/2021

ENDOG HAS A VARIETY OF ASSOCIATIONS WITH OTHER PROTEINS. For example, it may interact with other proteins on the inner mitochondrial membrane to co-participate in mitochondrial function, and it may also interact with proteins in signal transduction pathways to participate in cell signaling.

What are the differences in the expression levels of ENDOG in different tissues and cells? 05/31/2021

There are differences in the expression levels of ENDOG in different tissues and cells. For example, it is expressed higher in muscle tissue and lower in brain tissue. This difference may be related to the energy requirements and metabolic characteristics of different tissues and cells.

What conditions might be indicated by abnormal ENDOG levels? 04/29/2021

Abnormal ENDOG levels may indicate a variety of diseases, especially tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, etc. For example, in tumors such as lung, breast, and colon cancer, expression levels of ENDOG may be abnormally elevated.
