Growth Differentiation Factor (GDF)

Growth Differentiation Factor (GDF) Background

About Growth Differentiation Factor (GDF)

Growth/differentiation factors (GDF-1 to GDF-15) are members of the BMP family of TGF-β superfamily proteins. They are produced as inactive preproteinogens, which are then cleaved and assembled into active secreted homodimers. GDF dimers are disulfide-linked, with the exception of GDF-3 and -9.

GDF plays an important role in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. During development, GDF is involved in cell development, organ formation, embryonic development, and tissue repair. For example, in bone development, GDF participates in bone growth by promoting the secretion of osteoblasts from stem cells. In cartilage growth and repair, GDF regulates the proliferation and activation of chondrocytes and influences the process of cartilage tissue generation and repair. In addition, GDF is involved in the growth and function of cardiovascular, neuromodulatory, anatomical, and other systems.

GDF is also important in hematopoiesis. Research has identified several GDFs involved in hematopoiesis. For example, GDF-11 has been shown to have an effect on regulating HSC quiescence and proliferation. GDF-8 (also known as myoinhibin) is involved in the control of erythropoiesis and affects red blood cell development. GDF-15 is another GDF that plays a role in hematopoiesis and has been associated with a variety of diseases. Understanding the function and regulation of GDF in hematopoiesis is important for both basic research and clinical applications. By studying these growth factors, researchers aim to unravel the complex mechanisms of blood cell formation and differentiation and help develop new therapeutic strategies for a variety of blood disorders, such as anemia, leukemia, and bone marrow failure syndromes.
