Mstn

  • Official Full Name

    myostatin

  • Overview

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family and the TGF-beta superfamily. This group of proteins is characterized by a polybasic proteolytic processing site which is cleaved to produce a mature protein containing seven conserved cysteine residues. The members of this family are regulators of cell growth and differentiation in both embryonic and adult tissues. This gene is thought to encode a secreted protein which negatively regulates skeletal muscle growth.
  • Synonyms

Are there any known side effects of using MSTN inhibitors in clinical trials? 02/09/2022

Some potential side effects include joint stiffness, increased risk of fractures, and insulin resistance, which require close monitoring during trials.

How does the overexpression of MSTN affect muscle development? 12/26/2020

Overexpression of MSTN can lead to muscle atrophy and decreased muscle mass.

How do researchers regulate the dosage of MSTN protein therapy to ensure safety and efficacy? 02/07/2020

Researchers carefully monitor the dosage and administration of MSTN protein therapy through preclinical and clinical studies to establish the optimal therapeutic dose.

What are the potential risks associated with MSTN protein therapy? 09/13/2016

Possible risks include unintended effects on other organ systems and potential complications related to excessive muscle growth.
