GenomeWeb recently released the results of an annual salary survey. According to this year’s report, researchers, technical staff in bio-industry earn more than five years ago but less than last year. The survey has shown that the median salary for this industry is $75,000, while last year was $83,000.

In last year’s survey, median salary for senior scientists, senior researchers, senior technical staff was $97,200 and this year the group has shrunk to $90,100. Similarly, the median salary for project manager last year was $94,000, while only $80,500 this year.

 
Only a few respondents (4.7%) said their pay were cut last year and fewer people (2.6%) said they had been fired. However, among the respondents in diagnosis and clinical reference laboratories, 9.6% said they recently suffered a pay cut. Respondents slightly less than a third said their organization had layoffs in the past year. For equipment manufacturers and suppliers, as well as the pharmaceutical, bio-pharmaceutical or biotechnology company respondents, this proportion is slightly higher.

 
To complete this survey, GenomeWeb sent a link of the online survey to their registered users via email. The questionnaire asked the respondents to fill out the work, scientific background, salary and other information. A total of 762 people involved in the survey, who were representatives of academia, industry and other diagnostic laboratories.

 
The surveyed almost equally divided between men and women. The rate were 50.1% and 49.9%. Survey results show that the average salary of women is lower than their counterparts. Overall, women’s median salary is $71,200, while men has $80,000.

 
Of course, the pay also differs with positions. Male and female scientists, associate professor, or assistant professor’s salary is roughly equivalent, but compared with those in relatively high position, the gap is obvious. Working the same as vice president, male and female salaries were 159,000 and $ 130,000. While for the position of project manager, the salary for male and female is respectively $100,000 and $75,000.

 
According to the data, senior executives in the equipment manufacturing company, such as vice president or senior managers, their annual salary is more than $160,000. In addition, sales, marketing staff, researchers in equipment company are also treated well as their annual salary is about $100,000. In the scientific community, professors or PI’s annual salary is more than 120,000 US dollars, and associate professor or assistant professor earn about $90.000.

 
About a third of respondents don’t think there will be a raise this year, and over 40 percent of government workers think so. Most of the rest people think there might be a slight increase but less than 3%. Meanwhile, about one third of respondents said that their salaries increased slightly in the past six months.
