Calcium exists in tissues as ionic calcium or bound calcium associated with proteins, carbonates, or phosphates. Pathological calcification occurs when calcium salts precipitate within tissues, primarily as calcium phosphate.
Alizarin Red S is an anthraquinone derivative that chelates calcium salts to form an orange-red complex. This staining method is particularly sensitive for detecting small calcium deposits. The modified McGee–Russell method used in this kit combines Alizarin Red S with Mayer’s hematoxylin, staining calcium deposits orange-red and nuclei blue, making it suitable for tissues with minimal calcification.
