Calcium is present in tissues as ionic or bound forms, with pathological calcification occurring as insoluble calcium salts. In the silver nitrate method, calcium salts are replaced by silver ions, which are reduced to metallic silver upon light exposure, appearing black. This technique is suitable for large-scale detection of tissue calcification.
