Copper is normally present at very low levels and is not detectable by routine histological methods. Hepatic copper accumulation increases significantly in Wilson disease and cirrhosis. The rhodanine method is based on the formation of a black-green copper–rhodanine complex resulting from the reaction between rhodanine and copper salts.
