Product Overview :

Cytochrome oxidase (CO) is an intrinsic enzyme of the mitochondrial membrane and shows high activity in cells rich in mitochondria, such as cardiomyocytes, renal tubular epithelial cells, gastric parietal cells, and hepatocytes. CO activity is commonly used as an indicator of cellular oxidative metabolism and serves as a marker enzyme for mitochondria.
The cytochrome oxidase staining solution (diaminobenzidine method) is based on the catalytic oxidation of 3,3′-diaminobenzidine (DAB) by cytochrome oxidase. Oxidation of the amino side chains of DAB results in repeated oxidative polymerization and cyclization, forming an insoluble brown phenazine polymer at the site of enzyme activity. CO is sensitive to fixatives; therefore, fresh tissue sections are required for optimal staining.
