Elastic fibers are abundant in arterial walls, alveolar septa, and skin. The Verhoeff method, based on iron-iodine hematoxylin, is a classical elastic fiber staining technique.
This modified Verhoeff method excludes hazardous reagents. Elastic fibers stain intensely, particularly coarse fibers. Reagents are prepared fresh before use, as working solutions have limited stability.
