The GUS reporter system is widely used in plant transgenic studies due to minimal endogenous background activity. GUS hydrolyzes X-glucuronide to produce an insoluble blue indigo precipitate, allowing direct visualization of gene expression at tissue and cellular levels. Staining results are observable by eye or microscopy and are used exclusively for research purposes.
