Nissl bodies are basophilic granules in neuronal cytoplasm composed of rough endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes. They are stained blue-purple by basic dyes and vary in distribution and morphology among neurons. Nissl staining effectively demonstrates neuronal structure and pathological changes and is suitable for paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
