Significance of Measurement: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a key antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. It plays a critical role in protecting cells against oxidative stress.
Principle of Measurement: SOD inhibits the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) by superoxide radicals. The degree of inhibition, measured by absorbance at 560 nm, is used to calculate SOD activity.
