Significance of Measurement: Glutathione reductase (GR, EC 1.8.1.7) is a key enzyme in the glutathione antioxidant system. It catalyzes the reduction of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) to reduced glutathione (GSH), thereby maintaining intracellular redox balance and protecting cells from oxidative damage.
Principle of Measurement: GR catalyzes the reduction of GSSG using NADPH as an electron donor. NADPH is oxidized to NADP⁺, resulting in a decrease in absorbance at 340 nm. The rate of absorbance decline is proportional to GR activity.
