The myelin sheath is a multilayered lipid bilayer surrounding axons, enabling saltatory conduction via nodes of Ranvier. Weil myelin staining is used to assess myelin integrity, degeneration, necrosis, and regeneration.
Pathological changes such as swelling, fragmentation, spheroid formation, or demyelination can be clearly visualized, supporting neuropathological diagnosis and research.
