Oxidative stress can reflect a disturbance between the systemic production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses against radicals. Oxidative stress is very important and discovered over the past 40 years as an important factor in many forms of pathophysiology generally associated with aging. ROS can react with proteins, nucleic acids, and can cause lipids cell and tissue damage and can be measured using selective or general indicators.

Lipid peroxidation analysis
Lipid peroxidation is a well-demonstrated mechanism of cellular which injury in both plants and animals. It is used as an indicator of oxidative stress in living cells. Lipid peroxides are unstable to form a complex series of compounds including reactive carbonyl compounds. Polyunsaturated fatty acid peroxides can generate 4-hydroxyalkenals upon decomposition and malonaldehyde (MDA).
Glutathione (GSH) is an important antioxidant in animals, fungi and plants. It prevents damage to cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as peroxides, lipid peroxides, heavy metals and free radicals. It is an essence linkage between the carboxyl group of the glutamate side-chain and the amine group of cysteine (which is attached by normal peptide linkage to a glycine).
