Description : Platelet factor-4 is a 70-amino acid protein that is released from the alpha-granules of activated platelets and binds with high affinity to heparin. Its major physiologic role appears to be neutralization of heparin-like molecules on the endothelial surface of blood vessels, thereby inhibiting local antithrombin III activity and promoting coagulation. As a strong chemoattractant for neutrophils and fibroblasts, PF4 probably has a role in inflammation and wound repair. Oncostatin-A is a member of the CXC chemocinfamily. Human PF4 is used for the proof of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Furthermore it is used as an inhibitor in the angiogenesis during tumor therapy.
Source : Escherichia Coli.

Ask a question
Are there any therapeutic approaches targeting PF4 protein? 02/17/2023

Some research has explored the development of antibodies targeting PF4 to mitigate its pro-inflammatory effects, although such treatments are still in the early stages of investigation.

How does PF4 protein contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammation? 11/11/2022

PF4 can promote inflammation by recruiting and activating immune cells, such as monocytes and neutrophils, at the site of inflammation.

What are the potential treatment options for patients with HIT? 04/24/2017

Management often involves discontinuing heparin and initiating alternative anticoagulation strategies, such as direct thrombin inhibitors or fondaparinux.

Can PF4 protein be used as a biomarker for other conditions? 06/20/2016

Yes, elevated PF4 levels have been associated with various inflammatory states, making it a potential biomarker for certain diseases.

What diagnostic methods are used to assess PF4 protein levels? 01/30/2016

ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is commonly used to detect anti-PF4/heparin antibodies in patients suspected of having HIT.
