Description : | Platelet factor-4 is a 70-amino acid protein that is released from the alpha-granules of activated platelets and binds with high affinity to heparin. Its major physiologic role appears to be neutralization of heparin-like molecules on the endothelial surface of blood vessels, thereby inhibiting local antithrombin III activity and promoting coagulation. As a strong chemoattractant for neutrophils and fibroblasts, PF4 probably has a role in inflammation and wound repair. Oncostatin-A is a member of the CXC chemocinfamily. Human PF4 is used for the proof of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Furthermore it is used as an inhibitor in the angiogenesis during tumor therapy. |

Q&As (5)
Ask a questionSome research has explored the development of antibodies targeting PF4 to mitigate its pro-inflammatory effects, although such treatments are still in the early stages of investigation.
PF4 can promote inflammation by recruiting and activating immune cells, such as monocytes and neutrophils, at the site of inflammation.
Management often involves discontinuing heparin and initiating alternative anticoagulation strategies, such as direct thrombin inhibitors or fondaparinux.
Yes, elevated PF4 levels have been associated with various inflammatory states, making it a potential biomarker for certain diseases.
ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is commonly used to detect anti-PF4/heparin antibodies in patients suspected of having HIT.
