Official Full Name
lin-28 homolog (C. elegans)

Overview
Lin-28 homolog A is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LIN28 gene. It is a marker of undifferentiated human embryonic stem cells and has been used to enhance the efficiency of the formation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from human fibroblasts. It encodes a cytoplasmic mRNA-binding protein that binds to and enhances the translation of the Igf2 mRNA. Lin28 has also been shown to bind to the let-7 pre-miRNA and block production of the mature let-7 microRNA in mouse embryonic stem cells. -

Ask a questionDysregulation of LIN28 is associated with cancer. It can lead to the aberrant expression of let-7 miRNAs, contributing to uncontrolled cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis in various cancers.
LIN28 plays a role in maintaining stem cell pluripotency. Understanding its function is crucial for optimizing stem cell cultures in regenerative medicine, aiming to harness the full potential of stem cells for therapeutic applications.
LIN28 can influence alternative splicing events, impacting the diversity of RNA isoforms. Altered splicing patterns in LIN28-overexpressing cells may contribute to cellular transformation and disease progression.
LIN28 expression is regulated by various factors, including transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms. It is influenced by developmental cues, cell type specificity, and external stimuli.
LIN28 is involved in the reprogramming of somatic cells into iPSCs. Understanding its role in this process is critical for optimizing iPSC generation, potentially leading to improved therapies for regenerative medicine.
