Description : | This gene encodes a carcinoma-associated antigen and is a member of a family that includes at least two type I membrane proteins. This antigen is expressed on most normal epithelial cells and gastrointestinal carcinomas and functions as a homotypic calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule. The antigen is being used as a target for immunotherapy treatment of human carcinomas. Mutations in this gene result in congenital tufting enteropathy. |

Q&As (7)
Ask a questionEpCAM is highly expressed in epithelial tissues and some cancer cells.
It has a controversial role in cell adhesion, possibly contributing to both cell-cell adhesion and anti-adhesive properties.
EpCAM primarily functions in cell signaling, proliferation, and migration.
It often has a pro-tumorigenic role, promoting cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.
EpCAM is used as a biomarker to detect and isolate circulating tumor cells.
Strategies include developing EpCAM-targeted therapies for cancer treatment.
Genetic alterations in EpCAM are linked to some hereditary cancer syndromes.
