Official Full Name
peripheral myelin protein 22

Overview
PMP-22 (Peripheral Myelin Protein) is a glycoprotein expressed in the compact myolin of the peripheral nervous system. In the peripheral nervous system, PMP-22 is produced by myelinating Schwann cells and is coexpressed with the genes for myelin basic protein (MBP) and protein P0 during nerve development and regeneration. Alterations in the level of this protein cause several genetic human diseases. If the protein is duplicated, patients develop Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. If one copy of the gene is deleted, they suffer from the inherited tendency to pressure palsies. -

Q&As (4)
Ask a questionPMP22 functions to coordinate myelin phospholipids and also participates in the maintenance of Schwann cell homeostasis through proper structural folding and regulation.
PMP22 protein is highly expressed in peripheral nerves.
PMP22 has been closely associated with the study of diseases such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth and gastric cancer.
PMP22 deletion mutations lead to hereditary compression-susceptible neuropathy, and point mutations in the PMP22 gene lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth type-1A and Dejerine-Sottas syndrome.
