Ask a questionYes, acid phosphatase levels can be used to monitor the progression of prostate cancer. Changes in acid phosphatase levels over time can be used to track the effectiveness of treatment and to monitor the recurrence of the cancer.
The normal range of acid phosphatase levels in blood is 0.5 to 2.5 U/L for men and 0.1 to 1.0 U/L for women. Abnormal levels may indicate the presence of a disease or condition.
Acid phosphatase can be measured using various methods, including spectrophotometry, fluorometry, and immunoassays.
Acid phosphatase is clinically used as a biomarker for several conditions, such as prostate cancer, bone diseases, and Gaucher disease.
Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is a group of enzymes synthesized mainly in bone spleen and lungs.
The subform b of the isoenzyme 5 (TRACP5b) is most specific for osteoclasts and can be used as a marker reflecting osteoclast number and metabolic activity.
It is present in human seminal plasma at levels 100–1000× higher than in any other body fluid.
Acid phosphatases can also be distinguished based on their molecular weight into low-molecular-weight acid phosphatases and high-molecular-weight acid phosphatases, or on the basis of their resistance to inhibition by tartrate into tartrate-sensitive and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatases.
AP exists in several biological kingdoms, including plants, animals, fungi, and even bacteria. Research has shown AP to play a pivotal role in different physiological processes in humans, including bone resorption, immune defenses, pathogen clearance, epithelial growth regulation, and iron transport, among others.
