Description : | MUC16, also known as the CA125 antigen, is a mucin protein that may be found in type I transmembrane or secreted forms that are used monitor the progress of epithelial ovarian cancer therapy. Thought to provide a protective, lubricating barrier against particles and infectious agents at mucosal surfaces. Binding to MSLN mediates heterotypic cell adhesion. This may contribute to the metastasis of ovarian cancer to the peritoneum by initiating cell attachment to the mesothelial epithelium via binding to MSLN. |

Ask a questionMUC16 works with other mucins and immune components to maintain epithelial barrier function and immune responses.
It aids in forming the mucosal barrier, protecting against pathogens and mechanical damage.
Targeting MUC16 in cancer therapy, especially in ovarian cancer, could be effective in inhibiting tumor growth and spread.
Altered MUC16 activity can impact the body's defense against inflammation and infection.
MUC16, a mucin protein, is essential for maintaining the protective mucous layer on epithelial surfaces.
MUC16 is associated with cancer progression, particularly in ovarian cancer, where it may facilitate tumor growth and metastasis.
Genetic variations in MUC16 can lead to differences in mucosal integrity and potentially influence cancer susceptibility.
