Description : | Catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from AdoMet to trivalent arsenicals producing methylated and dimethylated arsenicals. It methylates arsenite to form methylarsonate, Me-AsO3H2, which is reduced by methylarsonate reductase to methylarsonite, Me-As(OH)2. Methylarsonite is also a substrate and it is converted into the much less toxic compound dimethylarsinate (cacodylate), Me2As(O)-OH. |

Q&As (7)
Ask a questionThe AS3MT protein plays a crucial role in the detoxification and elimination of arsenic from the body, preventing its accumulation and potential toxicity.
The AS3MT protein binds to and methylates inorganic arsenic, facilitating its conversion into organic arsenic metabolites that are easier to eliminate from the body.
The AS3MT protein is primarily associated with the metabolism of arsenic and has not been extensively linked to the metabolism of other substances.
Impairment or dysfunction of the AS3MT protein can lead to reduced arsenic methylation ability, potentially increasing arsenic toxicity in the body.
Yes, alterations in AS3MT gene expression can influence the methylation capacity of arsenic, potentially leading to variations in arsenic toxicity levels.
Yes, genetic variations in the AS3MT gene have been identified and can influence the activity and expression of the AS3MT protein.
The AS3MT protein is associated with arsenic-induced diseases and conditions, such as arsenic poisoning, arsenic-related cancers, and cardiovascular diseases.
