• Description: C3 convertases, generated during the first stage of complement activation, cleave C3, the central and most abundant component of the complement system. This proteolytic cleavage gives rise to a smaller C3a fragment and a larger C3b fragment. Similar to C4a, C3a is a soluble polypeptide that circulates away to perform its biological functions.
