Our immune system is developed to remove things that are alien to our bodies. However. Sometimes, some types of cancer cells contain mechanisms that block the immune system’s ability to recognize them. And some stimulating molecules can over-activate the immune system and cause it to collapse. So how to block this mechanism?
Scientists in this study focused on the so-called NGK2D ligands. And in the end they found that selenium compounds appear to have a very beneficial effect when it comes to neutralizing the special variants of the NGK2D. And this happens both in soluble form and when the molecule is placed on the cell surface. Fortunately, selenium compounds can be found in garlic and broccoli, thus, the over response of immune system can be slowed down.
"The overexpression seen in cancers such as melanoma, prostate cancer and certain types of leukemia significantly impairs the immune system. If we can find ways to slow down the over-stimulation, we are on the right track. The new results are yet another small step towards better cancer drugs with fewer adverse effects," says one of the chief scientists in this study.
