Description : |
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Toll-likereceptor (TLR) family which plays a fundamental role in pathogen recognitionand activation of innate immunity. TLRs are highly conserved from Drosophilato humans and share structural and functional similarities. They recognizepathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that are expressed oninfectious agents, and mediate the production of cytokines necessary for thedevelopment of effective immunity. The various TLRs exhibit different patternsof expression. This receptor is most abundantly expressed in placenta, and inmyelomonocytic subpopulation of the leukocytes. It has been implicated insignal transduction events induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) found in mostgram-negative bacteria. Mutations in this gene have been associated withdifferences in LPS responsiveness. Also, several transcript variants of thisgene have been found, but the protein coding potential of most of them isuncertain. |
