Description : | The mouse protein stargazin is one of five subunits comprising neuronal voltage-gated calcium channels. This subunit, gamma, is thought to stabilize the calcium channel in an inactive (closed) state. Mutations in the gene encoding stargazin have been associated with absence seizures, also known as petit-mal or spike-wave seizures. The protein encoded by this gene is structurally similar to the mouse stargazin protein and is a member of the neuronal calcium channel gamma subunit protein family. However, it appears unlikely that the encoded protein is part of a functional calcium channel. Rather, it appears to inhibit the expression of a specific calcium channel subunit. |

Q&As (7)
Ask a questionDysfunctions or mutations in CACNG7 have been suggested in certain neurological disorders, though more detailed research is essential for specific associations.
Genetic variations in the CACNG7 gene can impact its regulatory influence on calcium channels, potentially affecting neural communication and related processes.
CACNG7 acts as an auxiliary subunit, influencing the modulation of activity, trafficking, and surface expression of voltage-gated calcium channels.
CACNG7 mainly interacts with the alpha-1 subunit of calcium channels, and may also have associations with other proteins in the channel complex.
Through its interaction, CACNG7 can influence the channel's gating dynamics, cellular localization, and calcium ion permeation characteristics.
CACNG7 is primarily expressed in neural tissues, with significant levels in particular regions of the brain.
Techniques like mass spectrometry might uncover potential post-translational modifications on CACNG7.
