Scientific Background:  SIRT2 (sirtuin homologue 2) is a member of the NAD-dependent histone deacetylase family of proteins (sirtuns) which are involved in a variety of cellular functions. These functions include gene silencing, histone deacetylation, chromosomal stability, and aging. Members of the sirtuin family are characterized by a sirtuin core domain and grouped into four classes. SIRT2 is a human homolog of the yeast SIR2 and it acts as a transcriptional silencing mediator at mating-type loci, telomeres and ribosomal gene clusters. This gene's expression rapidly increases during mitosis and is multiply phosphorylated at the G2/M transition of the cell cycle. SIRT2 is part of a phosphorylation cascade where it is phosphorylated late in G2, during M, and into the period of cytokinesis. SIRT2 appears to play an opposing role to SIRT1 in neurodegenerative diseases.
