The CaM Kinases are inactive in the absence of stimuli; binding to Calcium/Calmodulin induces conformational changes and activation. CaM Kinases have broad substrate specificity, with many cellular functions. CaMKK1 plays a role in the calcium/calmodulin-dependent (CaM) kinase cascade.
