Description : This gene encodes a protein that is required for the formation of hypusine, a unique amino acid formed by the posttranslational modification of only one protein, eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A. The encoded protein catalyzes the first step in hypusine formation by transferring the butylamine moiety of spermidine to a specific lysine residue of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A precursor, forming an intermediate deoxyhypusine residue. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene.

Ask a question
Are there any resistance mechanisms against sulfonamides targeting DHPS? 04/30/2021

Yes, bacterial resistance to sulfonamides can arise due to mutations in DHPS that reduce the drug's binding affinity.

Can DHPS mutations affect the effectiveness of sulfonamides in treating bacterial infections? 06/26/2020

Yes, mutations in DHPS can lead to reduced effectiveness of sulfonamides, contributing to antibiotic resistance.

Are there any other clinical implications of DHPS beyond antibiotic treatment? 03/24/2020

DHPS mutations have been associated with resistance to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, a drug used to prevent and treat malaria.

In what clinical conditions are sulfonamides commonly used? 05/25/2018

Sulfonamides are used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and other bacterial infections.

Can DHPS be a target for drug development beyond antibiotics? 05/16/2016

DHPS has potential as a target for developing new antiparasitic drugs due to its role in folate biosynthesis in parasites such as Plasmodium.
