Description : |
Wee1 is a protein kinase that plays an important role in the regulation of the cell cycle, particularly in the G2 checkpoint. It functions to inhibit the activity of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), a key regulator of the G2/M transition, by phosphorylating it on a specific tyrosine residue. This phosphorylation inactivates CDK1, preventing the cell from entering mitosis until DNA replication and repair processes have been completed. Research has suggested that Wee1 plays a role in several diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer, inhibition of Wee1 has been suggested as a potential therapy to sensitize cancer cells to DNA damage and improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Additionally, Wee1 has been implicated in the regulation of neuronal survival and degeneration, making it a potential target for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. |
