SPTBN2

  • Official Full Name

    spectrin, beta, non-erythrocytic 2

  • Overview

Spectrins are principle components of a cells membrane-cytoskeleton and are composed of two alpha and two beta spectrin subunits. The protein encoded by this gene (SPTBN2), is called spectrin beta non-erythrocytic 2 or beta-III spectrin. It is related to, but distinct from, the beta-II spectrin gene which is also known as spectrin beta non-erythrocytic 1 (SPTBN1). SPTBN2 regulates the glutamate signaling pathway by stabilizing the glutamate transporter EAAT4 at the surface of the plasma membrane. Mutations in this gene cause a form of spinocerebellar ataxia, SCA5, that is characterized by neurodegeneration, progressive locomotor incoordination, dysarthria, and uncoordinated eye movements.

SPTBN2 has several biochemical functions, for example, actin binding, phospholipid binding, structural constituent of cytoskeleton. Some of the functions are cooperated with other proteins, some of the functions could acted by SPTBN2 itself. We selected most functions SPTBN2 had, and list some proteins which have the same functions with SPTBN2. You can find most of the proteins on our site.

SPTBN2 has direct interactions with proteins and molecules. Those interactions were detected by several methods such as yeast two hybrid, co-IP, pull-down and so on. We selected proteins and molecules interacted with SPTBN2 here. Most of them are supplied by our site. Hope this information will be useful for your research of SPTBN2.
