AK5

  • Official Full Name

    adenylate kinase 5

  • Overview

This gene encodes a member of the adenylate kinase family, which is involved in regulating the adenine nucleotide composition within a cell by catalyzing the reversible transfer of phosphate groups among adenine nucleotides. This member is related to the UMP/CMP kinase of several species. It is located in the cytosol and expressed exclusively in brain. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.

Ask a question
Are there any diseases or disorders associated with AK5 protein dysfunction? 04/05/2023

The specific role of AK5 protein dysfunction in diseases is not yet fully understood. However, alterations in adenylate kinase activities, including AK5, have been implicated in various conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. It suggests that dysregulation of cellular energy metabolism, in which AK5 is involved, may contribute to the development or progression of these diseases. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the connection between AK5 dysfunction and specific diseases.

Are there any known inhibitors or activators of AK5 protein? 12/21/2022

Currently, there are no well-established inhibitors or activators specifically targeting AK5 protein. The development of such compounds requires further research to understand the enzyme's function and to identify potential molecules that can selectively modulate AK5 activity.

How is the AK5 protein regulated? 01/16/2022

The regulation of AK5 protein is not extensively studied, but some mechanisms have been proposed. One aspect of regulation is transcriptional control, where the expression of the AK5 gene is modulated by various transcription factors and signaling pathways. For example, it has been shown that the tumor suppressor protein p53 can transcriptionally activate AK5 gene expression.

Is AK5 protein involved in any signaling pathways? 03/07/2021

AK5 protein is primarily involved in energy metabolism and does not have well-established roles in classical signaling pathways. However, it has been suggested to indirectly influence signaling pathways related to energy homeostasis through the regulation of AMP and ATP levels. Additionally, the interaction of AK5 with AMPK can impact cellular signaling related to energy sensing and metabolism.

Can genetic variations in AK5 contribute to disease susceptibility? 09/30/2020

Genetic variations in AK5 have not been extensively studied in terms of disease susceptibility. However, some studies have identified specific AK5 gene polymorphisms that may be associated with certain conditions, such as retinopathy in diabetes. Further research is needed to determine the extent to which AK5 genetic variations contribute to disease susceptibility.

Are there any inhibitors or activators of AK5 protein? 08/11/2020

Currently, there are no specific inhibitors or activators of AK5 that are widely used or well-characterized. Research in this area is relatively limited. However, it is possible that compounds targeting adenylate kinases in general may affect AK5 activity. In general, further studies are needed to identify specific modulators of AK5 and understand their effects on its enzymatic activity and cellular functions.

Does AK5 protein have a role in cancer development or progression? 10/18/2019

The role of AK5 protein in cancer development or progression is not fully understood. Some studies have suggested that AK5 expression may be altered in certain cancers, but the functional implications of these changes are still being investigated. Further research is needed to determine the involvement of AK5 in cancer and its therapeutic potential in this context.

Are there any known interactions or binding partners of AK5 protein? 03/26/2019

Yes, AK5 protein has been found to interact with other proteins in various cellular pathways. One example is its interaction with AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a master regulator of cellular energy metabolism. AK5 has also been reported to interact with other adenylate kinases, such as AK1 and AK2, forming complexes that facilitate energy transfer in the cell.

Can AK5 protein interact with other proteins? 03/07/2019

Yes, AK5 protein has been reported to interact with several other proteins. One study identified heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) as a binding partner of AK5. HSP90 is a molecular chaperone that aids in protein folding and stability. The interaction with HSP90 may help stabilize AK5 and regulate its enzymatic activity.

How is the expression of AK5 protein regulated? 02/02/2017

The regulation of AK5 protein expression is not extensively studied. However, some studies have reported that AK5 expression can be influenced by certain factors, such as hypoxia and inflammation. It is likely that AK5 expression regulation involves complex mechanisms that respond to the cellular energy status and metabolic demands. Further research is needed to fully understand the regulatory mechanisms governing AK5 expression.

Is AK5 protein found in all cell types? 05/30/2016

AK5 protein is expressed in a wide range of cell types, although its expression levels may vary depending on the specific tissue or cell type. AK5 is found in various organs, including the brain, heart, liver, and skeletal muscle, suggesting its involvement in fundamental cellular processes across different cell types.

Are there any known mutations in the AK5 gene associated with human diseases? 04/01/2016

There is limited information on mutations specifically in the AK5 gene associated with human diseases. However, some studies have reported alterations in adenylate kinase activities, including AK5, in certain pathological conditions.

Can AK5 protein be targeted for therapeutic purposes? 05/10/2015

The potential therapeutic targeting of AK5 protein is still being explored. Modulating AK5 activity could potentially impact cellular energy metabolism and have implications for diseases involving dysregulated energy balance. However, further research is needed to fully understand the functional significance of AK5 and to develop specific therapeutic strategies.

Where is AK5 protein found in the body? 04/01/2015

AK5 protein is found in various tissues and organs throughout the body. It is particularly abundant in the brain, heart, skeletal muscle, and liver, where energy demands are high.
