Genetically Modified Food: What Kind of Attitude should We Hold toward?

Reported by Creative BioMart, a Recombinant Proteins, Antibodies, ELISA kits supplier

According to a previous survey published on New York Times, over thirty percent participants expressed their worries about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as they concerned that this kinds of food might cause cancer or allergies or other problems.

How about authorities’ opinions? Actually many scientific regulatory bodies in the world, for example National Academies of Science and the Food and Drug Administration in U.S., advised that genetically modified foods pose no harm not also found in conventional or organic foods. However, the public remains deeply suspicious of them.

One of the concerns, the increase trends of allergy rise with the consumption of GMOs, such as genetically modified corn, indeed questioned the positive party. There is a widely read article talking about self-experience suffering from symptoms. Later a doctor diagnosed her eosinophilic disorder which could be the result of eating genetically modified (GMO) corn, according to the author. Then people began to notice that there seems to be link between increase trends of allergy with the increase consumption of GMO corn. However, genetic experts and agricultural experts disagree. They said there is no single documented study or case to show the advent affect of GMOs for 20 years. As to the coincidence between increase allergy and consumption of GMOs, it could be a random phenomenon, because countries that don’t consume GMOs also show increase trends of allergy.

Well both sides could be right, in some degree if not exactly. The discovery of GMOs is advancement for biotechnology industry, we have to admit that. But how should we treat GMOs? How do you think?
