About EGF Ligands
EGF (epidermal growth factor) ligands are a family of small proteins that bind and activate the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on the cell surface. EGF ligands are involved in a wide range of biological processes including cell growth, development, differentiation, proliferation, migration, survival, tissue regeneration and tissue repair. They are essential for the development and maintenance of various organs and tissues such as skin, liver, kidney, and brain. EGF family members share at least one common EGF structural domain, which consists of six conserved cysteine residues forming three disulfide bonds. EGF ligand family members include EGF, neuromodulin, bilobalamin, betacellulin, etc. The EGF family members' The activity of EGF family members is mediated by the EGF R/ErbB receptor tyrosine kinase. When unregulated, members of this family and their receptors are involved in tumor formation. They are secreted or membrane-bound molecules that regulate a variety of cellular functions through the activation of intracellular signaling pathways such as the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways. In addition, dysregulation of EGF ligands may contribute to the progression of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders.
