Description : | The protein encoded by this gene is part of a complex of proteins that constitute adherens junctions (AJs). AJs are necessary for the creation and maintenance of epithelial cell layers by regulating cell growth and adhesion between cells. The encoded protein also anchors the actin cytoskeleton and may be responsible for transmitting the contact inhibition signal that causes cells to stop dividing once the epithelial sheet is complete. Finally, this protein binds to the product of the APC gene, which is mutated in adenomatous polyposis of the colon. Mutations in this gene are a cause of colorectal cancer (CRC), pilomatrixoma (PTR), medulloblastoma (MDB), and ovarian cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. |

Q&As (5)
Ask a questionYes, CTNNB1 is implicated in the development and progression of pancreatic cancer, with its dysregulated activity contributing to tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis.
Mutations in the CTNNB1 gene lead to the stabilization and accumulation of β-catenin, contributing to the development of HCC, making it a potential biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of HCC.
Studies have shown that CTNNB1 expression levels can serve as an independent prognostic factor in gastric cancer, with high CTNNB1 expression correlating with poor patient outcomes.
While there are no direct CTNNB1-targeted therapies available, various drugs targeting the Wnt signaling pathway are being developed and tested, which indirectly impact CTNNB1 activity in cancer cells.
High expression levels of CTNNB1 in breast cancer cells have been linked to poor prognosis and shorter overall survival, indicating its potential as a prognostic marker for breast cancer.
